BAS Award for RASPO

The British Association of Steelbands (BAS) celebrated ten years of RASPO performances with an award presented by Toussaint Clarke to RASPO's director Mary Genis at the Annual Awards event in London on 5 December 2009.

BAS hosted the event for the 11th year at the Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury. The association was established in 1995 to represent British steel bands and to further the musical, artistic, educational and social aspects of this art. Pan Podium is the official BAS magazine. See

RASPO Steel Orchestra started as a carnival project in 1997 with tutors from Mangrove Steel Band. RASPO became established as a performing orchestra in 1999 following an invitation from the BBC to represent the South by taking part in a UK wide 'Abbathon' 'for BBC's Millenium Children in Need Appeal filmed live from Reading Concert Hall. This event was preceded by an invitation to take part in a programme for the makers of children's programme Rosie and Jim broadcast on ITV.

RASPO is now a well established orchestra with a professional ensemble and a series of high profile performances in their portfolio. Along with a teaching programme supported by CultureMix, and with continued support from Mangrove, RASPO plans to continue positively promoting pan for many years to come.
