Schools Steel Band Festival

Hosted by St Gabriel's School in Newbury the first School Steel Band Festival was a dramatic presentation of music, dance and song.

With a breathtaking finale from the Festival Orchestra over one hundred gifted and talented children played steel pan music together for the first time.

CultureMix tutors provide weekly music lessons to twenty-five primary and secondary schools in Slough, Reading, East and West Berkshire, Winchester, Cove and Basingstoke. More...

The festival brought together West Berkshire primary schools from Lambourn, Pangbourne, Theale, Welford and Wickham, Tilehurst based Springfield Primary and West Reading's Oxford Road Community School.

The programme featured performances from Theale Choir, St Gabriel's Big Band, Welford and Wickham dancers as well as solo performances from four school steel bands. RASPO Steel Band performed 'Pan in A minor' with Rosie Rostron and guest percussionist Karlos Edwards.

For the grand finale the Schools Steel Band Festival Orchestra performed the popular calypso Hot Hot Hot by Caribbean soca artist Arrow, and El Cumbanchero by Puerto Rican composer Rafael Hernandez.

BBC Radio Berkshire presenter Bridgitte Tetteh invited Mary Genis and Oxford Road head teacher Claire Hurst to join her live to promote the Schools Steel Band Festival.

Ten year olds Tiffany and Rachel came along to express their excitement at the chance to play in a large orchestra by playing an excerpt from El Cumbanchero.
