Summer Carnival Steel Band project

The RASPO summer carnival steel band project aimed to attract teenagers and adults to join RASPO for a month of free workshops followed by live performances.

The launch event, attended by RASPO patron and the artistic director of Global Carnival Centre Pax Nindi, took place on 29 July 2014 at MacDevitts studio South Street Arts Centre in Reading Berkshire.

Newcomers and visitors joined RASPO arrangers, tutors and musicians for the first of eight workshops to learn selected calypso tunes from RASPO's repertoire.

The project was a great success with all the newcomers performing with RASPO in Reading and at London Notting Hill Carnival.

''I would like to thank you so much for making Suzanne and me feel so welcome on Tuesday night. We thoroughly enjoyed the workshop rehearsal and meeting everyone. In fact, I loved it.
I felt very lucky to be part of that rehearsal with all that wonderful energy and rhythm. The music emanating from the steel pans was to die for and we drove home feeling very invigorated. Thanks also for giving us some easy parts to play which made us feel part of it.''

''Overall, my experience with RASPO has been very positive and enjoyable. I have no musical experience, so learning 6 songs in a relatively short period of time and performing publicly has been a wonderful experience. I'm very grateful for the opportunity and would love to continue (that is if you'll let me ;-) )'' Tim Leung
