Reggae Fridays - Open Mic Night

Welcome to Reggae Friday’s Open Mic events for 2023 celebrating established reggae artists and encouraging upcoming talent.

Reggae Friday is open mic event has been a regular feature at the CultureMix arts and Music Centre since May 2022 hosting a range of reggae royalty including British lovers rock artist Peter Hunnigale, the front man of Musical Youth fame Dennis Seaton, Empress of Roots Soul Teshay Makeda, roots reggae singer Prince Malachi and in February to celebrate the earth days of reggae greats like Dennis Brown a visit from Bob Marley’s guitarist Junior Marvin.

With reggae royalty gracing the stage the popular nights are well attended with artists backed by the best British reggae musicians; drummer Carl ‘Carlalou’ Benjamin (The Wailers, Julian Marley, Lee Perry, Dawn Penn); keyboard player Cyrus ‘Monkites’ Richard (Black Uhuru, Mighty Diamonds, Abyssinians); Reggae Collective stalwart guitarist Derick Andrews (Boney M, Aqua Livi); all led by Grammy award winning producer, bass guitar supremo and musical director Don Chandler.

With regular performances from talented reggae singer songwriter Jnr Watson, Reggae’s Got Talent winner Rafeelya, alongside Reading Reggae Collective artists the events celebrate reggae music all year round including the earthdays of Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and John Holt.

The free event on Friday 3 March features reggae singer Tann-I Browne former Greensleeves Records artist.

With selecta DJ Lou Mulato spinning tunes in between acts, the bar opens from 7pm with a sizzling selection of Caribbean beers, spirits and soft drinks.

We welcome musicians, singers, rappers and spoken word artists to sign up and take part in the Open Mic from 9pm to 10pm. Booking in advance is recommended.

This is an 18+ event. ID required on entry.

NOTE: Friday 3 March is a free event. From April 2023 there will be a small entry charge.
